🔹 General / Getting Started

Is Screenflick free?

You can download an unlimited free trial of Screenflick to explore all of the features and record as much as you want. The trial adds a small watermark to exported videos. After purchasing a license, you can re-export the recording and it will not have a watermark on it. (You don't need to re-record to not have a watermark.)

What macOS versions does Screenflick support?

Screenflick supports macOS 11 Big Sur and later, including macOS Sonoma and Sequoia on both Intel and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, etc) Macs. Older versions of Screenflick DO run on previous versions of macOS. If you need to run on an older macOS, find the older version of Screenflick that your Mac supports here. After purchasing a license for the latest verison of Screenflick, send an email and we'll send you a license key that can be used in the older version.

How is Screenflick different from QuickTime or OBS?

QuickTime is simple but limited — it can’t record system audio, and has minimal control over frame rate, resolution, or overlays. While OBS is focused around streaming, Screenflick is focused on creating high quality recordings. For recording, OBS can be powerful but also complicated for some users, with a steep learning curve and heavy setup. Screenflick gives you the best of both: effortless setup, automatic system audio capture, smooth high-frame-rate recording, and Mac-optimized performance — all in a lightweight, purpose-built app.

🔴 Recording Features

Can Screenflick record system audio on Mac?

Yes. Screenflick records all sound coming from your Mac — music, videos, Zoom calls, or any other app’s output. On macOS 12.3 and later this is done without requiring any extra setup. On earlier versions, a simple lightweight plugin called "Screenflick Loopback" will be installed when necessary.

Can I record my webcam and screen at the same time?

Yes. You can overlay your webcam video on the screen recording for tutorials, presentations, or reaction videos. You can adjust the webcam’s size, position, and border before or after recording. You can have the camera's video feed visible on screen during the recording process, AND it can it either be invisible to the recording (only you can see it), or can be captured in the recording (what you see is what you get).

Can I record both microphone and system audio simultaneously?

Absolutely. Screenflick can capture your microphone and system audio in sync, allowing for clear voice-over commentary while preserving app or game sound.

Does Screenflick show mouse clicks and keystrokes?

Yes. You can display visual indicators for mouse clicks and on-screen keystrokes to make tutorials easier to follow. The display of the clicks and key presses is customizable and can be changed AFTER the recording is finished.

Can I draw or highlight on the screen while recording?

Yes. Screenflick lets you draw, highlight, and annotate during recording — perfect for training videos or educational content.

Can Screenflick record in 4K or 5K resolution?

Yes. Screenflick can capture at any resolution supported by your Mac display — including Retina, 4K, and 5K — and at up to 60 frames per second (or higher, depending on hardware).

Does Screenflick support time-lapse recording?

Yes. Screenflick includes options for time-lapse recording to capture long processes efficiently. Record at low frame rates for ultimate efficiency, or record at a standard frame rate and simply export the recording at a higher speed.

Can I schedule or remotely control recordings?

Yes. Screenflick includes automation options, including support for Automator and Shortcuts. You can also use the optional Screenflick Remote app on iPhone to manually start and stop recordings.

Do I have to export my recordings?

You can watch recordings inside Screenflick without exporting. But to share the recordings on the internet or with others, you'll need to export. Screenflick supports multiple formats and resolutions — including H.264, HEVC, and ProRes — with full control over frame rate, scaling, and quality. You can export a recording any number of times with any settings you want. The screen, audio, and webcam can also be exported separately for importing into external editing software like iMovie, Final Cut, Resolve, and Premiere.

👌 Compatibility & Performance

Does Screenflick affect my Mac’s performance while recording?

Screenflick is optimized for efficiency. It uses hardware-accelerated instructions for compression/encoding, so even high-resolution, high-frame-rate captures run smoothly on modern Macs. It's always possible to push hardware to the limits, but even recording 5K at 60 FPS is absolutely achievable.

Can Screenflick record from external displays?

Yes. Screenflick can record any connected display, including Retina MacBooks, iMacs, and external monitors. You can choose which screen to record in the capture options. Screenflick does not currently support recording multiple screens at a time.

Can Screenflick record gameplay?

Absolutely. Screenflick can capture fast-paced gameplay at full resolution and 60+ fps while recording system and mic audio. It’s ideal for Let’s Plays, walkthroughs, and edited game demos.

🤝 Privacy, Support & Licensing

Does Screenflick record in the background or upload anything?

No. Screenflick records only when you start a recording and saves all video locally on your Mac. It never uploads recordings or collects personal data.

How is licensing handled? Can I use Screenflick on multiple Macs?

See the User License Agreement for more information. You can use your license on multiple Macs as long as you are the only one using it.

Is there a refund policy?

Yes. If Screenflick doesn’t meet your needs, you can request a refund within a reasonable period (typically 30 days). That said, the number of people who actually want a refund is very very small, and half of them choose to keep it once they have a simple misunderstanding clarified. Send an email to support if you ever have a problem!

How can I contact support?

You can reach the Araelium support team via email. Most users express surprise at how quickly they get an answer! There’s also built-in and online documentation and troubleshooting tips on the website.

🤖 Technical & Miscellaneous

Can I record system audio from specific apps only?

Yes. On macOS 12.3 and later, by telling Screenflick to only record windows from certain applications (or ignore certain applications), Screenflick also will only record the system audio you want.

Does Screenflick capture DRM-protected content (like Netflix or Apple TV)?

Unfortunately, no. All screen recording applications on macOS are blocked from recording protected video from DRM-protected apps or streaming services, when that video is being played by Apple's underlying video player. To avoid the DRM protection, you can (for now) using these work arounds: For DVDs, you can play them in VLC, and for streaming media in a web browser, use Chrome and turn of the "Hardware accelerated video playback" option in its settings.

How big are the recording files?

The exported file size depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. Screenflick uses efficient compression (H.264 or HEVC), and you can adjust recording scale and quality to balance size and visual quality. Screenflick has separate Basic and Advanced settings panels to make that as simple and fine tuned as you want.

How often is Screenflick updated?

Screenflick is actively maintained and regularly updated for new macOS versions and Apple hardware. The app has been in continuous development since 2007. There's no specific or "guaranteed" release schedule, but there have been literally hundreds of updates over the years. If you ever want a feature or something change, ask!
